Mezzanines are structural floor systems within buildings, built between two permanent original stories. Mezzanines are usually free standing and can be relocated. Mezzanines are constructed out of three main materials; steel, aluminum, and fiberglass. We have compiled a list of these mezzanines with specifications, benefits and drawbacks of each.

Structural Steel Mezzanines

Understructure of Structural Steel Mezzanines:
Hot Rolled Structural I-Beams, Open Web Bar Joists, Tubular Columns, Structural I-Beam Columns Mezzanine Stairs, Gates, and Handrail:

Common Stairs for structural steel mezzanines:
OSHA and BOCA.

Common Handrail for structural steel mezzanines:
Horizontal 2 and 3 Rail, Baluster Handrail, Solid Panel Handrail.

Common Gates for structural steel mezzanines:
Lift Out, Swing, and Sliding Gates.

Decking Options for Structural Steel Mezzanines: Common varieties of decking for structural steel mezzanines: B-Deck and Plywood, Bar Grating, Plank Decking, Concrete and Diamond Plate Steel.

Finishes for Structural Steel Mezzanines: Wet Paint, Powder Coat, Epoxy, Urethane, Hot Dipped Galvanized.

Benefits of Structural Steel Mezzanines:
Structural steel mezzanines allow for a much greater column spacing than any other mezzanine system. Electrical conduit, water pipes etc. can be easily run through open web bar joists. Open web bar joist give a much more "open feel" than standard beams, giving the illusion of more clear height. Structural I-beams can be used to minimize the "deck profile" of mezzanines.

Drawbacks of Structural Steel Mezzanines:
Structural steel mezzanines are much heavier than most other systems so will have a higher dead load and a higher floor load. The increased weight will also increase freight cost from factory. Structural steel mezzanines have a rougher finish than any other mezzanines.

Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines

Understructure of Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines:
Sheet metal bent to a c-channel in a break press. Tubular steel columns or tapered columns.

Mezzanine Stairs, Gates, and Handrail:
Common Stairs for cold rolled steel mezzanines: OSHA and BOCA/ Common Handrail for cold rolled steel mezzanines: Horizontal 2 and 3 Rail, Baluster Handrail, Solid Panel Handrail. Common Gates for cold rolled steel mezzanines: Lift Out, Swing, and Sliding Gates.

Decking Options for Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines: Common varieties of decking for cold rolled steel mezzanines: B-Deck and Plywood, Bar Grating, Plank Decking.

Finishes for Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines:
Wet Paint, Powder Coat, Pre-Galvanized.

Benefits of Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines:
Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines are made from sheet metal so they are much lighter than structural steel mezzanines. Cold rolled steel also has a very smooth finish so they can be easily used in "display" applications or public buildings. Cold rolled steel can be pre-galvanized and this offers a substantial savings over hot dipped galvanized, stainless steel or aluminum mezzanines.

Drawbacks of Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines:
Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanine Systems are very limited in column spacing, usually 10' -15' and generally no more than 20'. Cold rolled steel mezzanines can reach all common live load capacities, but are unable to reach the high live loads or heavily concentrated point loads.

Stainless Steel Mezzanines

Understructure of Stainless Steel Mezzanines:
Sheet metal bent to a c-channel in a break press. Tubular steel columns.

Mezzanine Stairs, Gates, and Handrail:
Common Stairs for stainless steel mezzanines: OSHA and BOCA.
Common Handrail for stainless steel mezzanines: Horizontal 2 and 3 Rail, Solid Panel Handrail.
Common Gates for stainless steel mezzanines: Lift Out, Swing, and Sliding Gates.

Decking Options for Stainless Steel Mezzanines:
Common varieties of decking for stainless steel mezzanines: Bar Grating, Stainless Diamond Plate Steel, Plank Decking.

Finishes for Stainless Steel Mezzanines:
None per se, Stainless Steel.

Benefits of Stainless Steel Mezzanines
: Stainless steel mezzanines are highly resistive to wet environments, most chemicals and stainless steel is a FDA approved surface. The latter being the largest benefit. They are generally designed for easy wash down and are commonly put in food, or other FDA regulated, processing plants.

Drawbacks of Stainless Steel Mezzanines:
MONEY; stainless steel mezzanines are very expensive, very expensive! Stainless steel mezzanines are restricted to smaller column spans, generally 10' - 20' max.

Aluminum Mezzanines

Understructure of Aluminum Mezzanines:
Extruded aluminum C-Channels or I-Beams. Tubular Aluminum Columns.

Mezzanine Stairs, Gates, and Handrail:
Common Stairs for aluminum mezzanines: OSHA and BOCA.
Common Handrail for aluminum mezzanines: Horizontal 2 and 3 Rail.
Common Gates for aluminum mezzanines: Lift Out, Swing, and Sliding Gates.

Decking Options for Aluminum Mezzanines:
Common varieties of decking for aluminum mezzanines: Aluminum Plank Grating, Fiberglass Bar Grating.

Finishes for Aluminum Mezzanines:
Anodized Aluminum.

Benefits of Aluminum Mezzanines:
Aluminum, like fiberglass, is impervious to rust. Aluminum mezzanines can be safely immersed in water without worry. Aluminum is also very light so many smaller mobile work platforms are made from aluminum.

Drawbacks of Aluminum Mezzanines:
Aluminum is not nearly as strong as steel so it is generally not used to support heavy loads. The column spans are decreased to around 10' max. Aluminum mezzanines are also about 3-5 times more expensive than steel!

Structural Fiberglass Mezzanines

Understructure of Structural Fiberglass Mezzanines:
Structural fiberglass shapes that are generally pultruded. Structural fiberglass I-beam columns

Mezzanine Stairs, Gates, and Handrail:
Common Stairs for structural fiberglass mezzanines: OSHA and BOCA.
Common Handrail for structural fiberglass mezzanines: Horizontal 2 and 3 Rail.
Common Gates for structural fiberglass mezzanines: Lift Out, Swing, and Sliding Gates.

Decking Options for Structural Fiberglass Mezzanines:
Common varieties of decking for structural fiberglass mezzanines: Fiberglass Bar Grating.

Finishes for Structural Fiberglass Mezzanines:
Smooth Fiberglass.

Benefits of Structural Fiberglass Mezzanines:
Fiberglass mezzanines won't rust or contaminate. They can be immersed in water and easily washed down. Structural fiberglass color won't ever "chip off" because it is molded into the fiberglass.

Drawbacks of Structural Fiberglass Mezzanines:
Fiberglass mezzanines are much more expensive than their steel counterparts ( usually 2-3x). Fiberglass systems have more "give" than steel, components such as handrail sway a bit.

Rack Supported Mezzanines

Understructure of Rack Supported Mezzanines:
Pallet rack or heavy duty shelving

Mezzanine Stairs, Gates, and Handrail:
Common Stairs for rack supported mezzanines: OSHA and BOCA.
Common Handrail for rack supported mezzanines: Horizontal 2 and 3 Rail.
Common Gates for rack supported mezzanines: generally no gates but any gate will work, usually material lifts are used to transport product from floor to mezzanine.

Decking Options for Rack Supported Mezzanines:
Common varieties of decking for rack supported mezzanines: B-Deck and Plywood, Bar Grating, Plank Decking.

Finishes for Rack Supported Mezzanines:
Generally speaking, shelving and pallet rack have a wet paint or powder coat paint finish.

Benefits of Rack Supported Mezzanines:
Shelving / rack supported mezzanines or "catwalk systems" are designed for high density storage. They are very cost effective, combining the storage and the structure into one unit.

Drawbacks of Rack Supported Mezzanines:
Once the mezzanine is up and installed it is very difficult to rearrange the layout. Mezzanine shelf heights can be easily changed but that's about it.
