Benefits of Structural Steel Mezzanines:
Structural steel mezzanines allow for a much greater column spacing than any other mezzanine system. Electrical conduit, water pipes etc. can be easily run through open web bar joists. Open web bar joist give a much more "open feel" than standard beams, giving the illusion of more clear height. Structural I-beams can be used to minimize the "deck profile" of mezzanines.
Drawbacks of Structural Steel Mezzanines:
Structural steel mezzanines are much heavier than most other systems so will have a higher dead load and a higher floor load. The increased weight will also increase freight cost from factory. Structural steel mezzanines have a rougher finish than any other mezzanines.

Benefits of Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines:
Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines are made from sheet metal so they are much lighter than structural steel mezzanines. Cold rolled steel also has a very smooth finish so they can be easily used in "display" applications or public buildings. Cold rolled steel can be pre-galvanized and this offers a substantial savings over hot dipped galvanized, stainless steel or aluminum mezzanines.
Drawbacks of Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines:
Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanine Systems are very limited in column spacing, usually 10' -15' and generally no more than 20'. Cold rolled steel mezzanines can reach all common live load capacities, but are unable to reach the high live loads or heavily concentrated point loads.

Stainless steel mezzanines are highly resistive to wet environments, most chemicals and stainless steel is a FDA approved surface. The latter being the largest benefit. They are generally designed for easy wash down and are commonly put in food, or other FDA regulated, processing plants.
Drawbacks of Stainless Steel Mezzanines:
MONEY; stainless steel mezzanines are very expensive, very expensive! Stainless steel mezzanines are restricted to smaller column spans, generally 10' - 20' max.

Benefits of Aluminum Mezzanines:
Aluminum, like fiberglass, is impervious to rust. Aluminum mezzanines can be safely immersed in water without worry. Aluminum is also very light so many smaller mobile work platforms are made from aluminum.
Drawbacks of Aluminum Mezzanines:
Aluminum is not nearly as strong as steel so it is generally not used to support heavy loads. The column spans are decreased to around 10' max. Aluminum mezzanines are also about 3-5 times more expensive than steel!

Fiberglass mezzanines won't rust or contaminate. They can be immersed in water and easily washed down. Structural fiberglass color won't ever "chip off" because it is molded into the fiberglass.

Fiberglass mezzanines are much more expensive than their steel counterparts ( usually 2-3x). Fiberglass systems have more "give" than steel, components such as handrail sway a bit.

Drawbacks of Rack Supported Mezzanines:
Once the mezzanine is up and installed it is very difficult to rearrange the layout. Mezzanine shelf heights can be easily changed but that's about it.
